Education, or showbiz?

Somporn Thapanachai is Deputy Business Editor, Bangkok Post. She certainly does not agree with supporting a school student to join the competition to become a singer. The firm True started recruiting its candidates for the latest 7th season of AF with the new age requirement set at 15 years, instead of the usual 18 for its earlier six seasons. True's executives reasoned that the new age was in line with international trends and also to lengthen the working period in the showbiz industry. True kept its online audition open till May 31. Then the recruitment team travelled to all regions of Thailand in June. Finally, 100 contestants entered the AF house on June 27 to be trained for the first concert on stage on July 3 - the day the majority of them knew their dream quest would end, as the 12 finalists were announced. The youths who did not make it to stay on in the show were likely to resume their studies in school, catching up with classmates as they'd missed school for a week. But for those 12 finalists, their chances of going back to school this year will diminish each week they stay longer in the AF house. This season, eight contestants are aged between 15 and 17 years, and are studying at the high school level. If one of them stays on to become the winner, it means he or she will have to stay in the house for 12 weeks; that is, they will be missing school for 12 weeks. It seems certain this winner will have to drop studies for a year as there is no half-year "admission" for students to high school. If the winner is a university student, dropping out for a semester would have been possible. She suggested that the organizer should have adjusted the timing of the show accordingly so that it would have coincided with the school holidays. She said that there is no argument either about the company's efforts and its success in developing new talent for the Thai entertainment industry - but there should be a better way to sustain the business without jeopardizing the contestants' education.

Recovery recipe discussed
Education, services sector the focus
Published: 16/07/2010 at 12:00 AM

The consensus emerged at seminar entitled "Thailand's Investment Environment: Looking Forward," hosted by the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking yesterday. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva opened the event with an address stressing the importance of full participation from all sectors in the reforms to narrow social and income disparities. The committee said that reforms of the service sector and education system will help Thailand address future challenges and compete better in the world economy. The share of services has increased in these countries but in Thailand it's on a decline. If Thailand wants to survive, it needs to grow the service sector faster. A recent survey showed foreign investment in the service sector in Thailand was among the lowest in East Asia due to restrictive rules. Actions should be taken to ease restrictions in the Foreign Business Act and to pass the Secured Transaction Act to use accounts receivable as collateral educational reforms, especially equal access to quality education for low-income citizens. Education would help combat corruption, which is the core political problem in Thailand. The chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries said educational reforms should be emphasized if Thailand is to reap the most benefits from Asian integration under the Asian Economic Community by 2015.

The conclusion of the sassiness leaders have the opinions that accelerating growth of the service sector and improving the quality of education should be the priorities for Thailand in driving its economic expansion and retaining its investment attractiveness
